"Baby Al, promise me you ain't gon’

"I promise."

“I gotta get to a spot over here . . . It’s a spot over here . . . Gotta get to it . . . Where’s that spot over here . . . Eastside . . . Eastside . . . " Dwayne wondered, eyes burning with tears, yearning for fresh crack. He looked at Mattie for the last time and dropped her obituary. The paper twirled and tumbled with the wind along the dock, eventually landing in the river. One last document to look at; he fiddled inside his pocket and came out with Gwenny’s obituary, reading it thoroughly. He read it twice more, hanging on to every tragic word.

"She leaves to mourn, one son . . . One son . . . One son . . . one son," Dwayne repeated, seething. He flung the bat into the river.

"One fucking crackhead son! One goddamned crackhead son . . . A fucking crackhead son who killed her,” he yelled, clutching his mother's obituary. He felt inside his pockets for cash, the routine. The money had been decent, but the checks would soon end. The social service agency had been trying to contact Al for months, so he would have to finish his mission immediately. Remaining emotional, Dwayne kicked empty beer cans and bottles, dodging dog manure, heading towards the closest available crackspot.

"She . . . She . . . She leave to mourn . . . her death . . . one . . . fucking crackhead . . . a fucking crackhead zebra who killed her . . . I killed my moms . . . I . . . Shit . . . I ain't shit . . . I ain't nothing but a fucking crackhead," Dwayne cried.
